Ozone therapy can be used to treat people who have tested positive for Covid-19.

With a letter sent on March 24 to the Scientific Society of Oxygen Ozone Therapy (SIOOT), the Scientific Secretariat of the President of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) authorizes the use of ozone therapy for the treatment of people tested positive for Covid-19 .

It is written in the letter that the proposal of the SIOOT protocol for a possible use of Oxygen Ozone Therapy “in the treatment of interstitial coronavirus pneumonia has been carefully evaluated by some ISS experts”.

“The data actually available compared to the proposed indication – continues the letter – essentially consist in demonstrating the effectiveness of ozone in killing the SARS virus in monkey cells, and in the clinical experience of the benefit found in patients with bronchopneumonia” .

After evaluating possible insights, the letter signed by dr. Luigi Bertinato, Head of the President’s Scientific Secretariat, says that since the proposal to use oxygen ozone “is supported by clinical centers experienced in the treatment of viral pneumonia, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità considers it appropriate that the treatment itself can be carried out, after acquiring the patient’s informed consent, by doctors with specific experience and with the availability of appropriate instruments, as described in detail in the protocol itself “.

In the past, the Superior Health Council had also been involved in gathering information on the problems related to the use of oxygen-ozone therapy.

In a letter from the Ministry of Health – sent to the Regional and Provincial Councilors for Health, under the command of the Carabinieri N.A.S. of Rome and to the Government Commissioners of the Regions and Provinces – it is written that «In the session of 23 July 1992, the Superior Council of Health carried out a review of the national and international literature on the subject and, in particular, of some of the most recent scientific papers appearing in journals accessible through Medline ».

The letter reiterates that “the antibacterial and antiviral activity of the treatment with oxygen ozone has been ascertained with regard to the blood used for transfusion and blood products”.

In the request for authorization to use oxygen-ozone therapy, SIOOT recalled that:

● According to the results of an experiment conducted in China in the P3 national laboratory led by Professor Li Zelin, ozone has proven effective in killing the SARS virus inoculated on green monkey kidney cells, achieving a kill rate of 99.22 %.

● The virus discovered in Wuhan and the SARS virus both belong to the coronavirus strain. The researchers found that Covid-19 is 80% similar to the SARS virus. It is therefore reasonable to foresee that ozone can be equally effective in the prevention and control of the new coronavirus.

● SIOOT doctors have treated many patients with bronchopneumonia with Oxygen Ozone Therapy SIOOT. The results of the ozone therapy have been excellent. The duration of the disease was reduced and a prompt recovery of hypoxemia and radiological picture was highlighted in patients. Furthermore, the practice with ozone oxygen proposed by SIOOT is not incompatible with other drug therapies.

SIOOT has announced that, to date, at least ten hospital centers are already using oxygen-ozone in the treatment of Covid-19 positive patients. The hospitals are located in Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Lazio.

In this regard, SIOOT has undertaken to communicate the first clinical results from hospitals that are practicing ozone therapy within 40 days to the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.
